Therapy for Food Allergy Moms
in Long Beach, CA
Food allergy moms are different.
Maybe it’s the high levels of stress and anxiety that come from the constant vigilance required to keep your child safe. Or the pressure to be perfect and in control - knowing that with mistakes or accidental food exposures, the stakes are high. All the careful planning around school lunches, birthday parties, travel, and eating out can be draining - and avoiding danger by staying home can be isolating, leaving you feeling lonely and depressed.
We are fierce advocates, expert label-readers, meticulous meal planners, and always prepared. The mental load of managing allergen avoidance, researching and making decisions about treatments, and always being prepared for accidental ingestion of allergens is CONSTANT (like the “keys, phone, wallet, Epi-Pen” check every time you leave the house?!)
Living in fear, feeling worried, facing feelings of guilt and grief - it’s not easy. It’s scary when your baby has to have emergency treatment. It’s sad when they can’t enjoy activities that other kids can without worry and fear. “Allergy anxiety” can keep you second guessing choices, struggling to find a balance between protecting your child and letting them experience childhood and growing up.
I understand and I'm here to help.
My Approach to Therapy for Allergy Moms
There’s no doubt that living with food allergies has a psychological impact. But living with risk does not have to mean living in fear and anxiety.
My goal as a therapist for moms of kids with food allergies is to help you find a sense of peace and safety - even while living with risk and uncertainty. Together we will work to help you understand your anxiety and worry and find the best ways for you to manage and cope with it, improving your confidence in parenting - and your quality of life as a food allergy mom. Together we can help you find balance.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Model for Parents of Children with Food Allergy
I use an evidence-based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) model specifically for parents of children with food allergies. This treatment gives us a framework to identify, evaluate, and change unhelpful patterns of thinking that impact your mood and behavior. CBT can be combined with Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT), to help us better understand your interpersonal needs, improve social support and communication patterns, and acquire new coping skills for your role as a food allergy mom.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) for Food Allergies
Food allergies can be traumatic. The experience of your child having a severe reaction is scary - and can leave you feeling helpless and out of control. The trauma of this can impact you for long after the reaction - and there’s the fear of it happening again. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) can help you process difficult and traumatic experiences and reduce your triggers - so you can be present as a parent.
EMDR is highly researched and proven effected through clinical trials and other research and is endorsed by the American Psychiatric Association and World Health Organization.
